The ONC and HHS has released its final rule on implementation of significant use, which describes how hospitals and providers should use electronic health records EMR Software
ARRA to receive funds. This is a significant announcement that sets priorities for information technology for healthcare organizations over the next five years.
Some of the requirements have been relaxed. For example, instead of compliance requirements 100%, there is a mixture of basic themes and menu items. The provider must comply with the basics and then meet some of the menu items.
Fortunately, the NCB has provided a way for most clinics and hospitals to easily achieve compliance in the first year.
AIU clause states that any provider can comply by purchasing a new EHR system, the implementation of a system, or upgrading a current system. The biggest qualification is that the system must be certified and the certification process and certification bodies has not yet been determined. Most EHR software vendors are planning to seek certification and release improvements to meet the significant use.
For example, if your practice is running Centricity, Allscripts, NextGen, or Epic, or other EHR system is likely to receive an update later this year or early 2011. Upgrading your system will qualify for the meaningful use of dollars.
However, note that then have to prove significant use for all 2012. Use the breathing room in the first year with caution as it prepares to set stricter requirements in the coming years.
