Updates on the meaningful use, HME Technology certificates and the Stimulus Bill

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) documents which shed light on what doctors and hospitals must do to qualify for electronic health records (EHR) payment of incentives under the Law of HiTech. To qualify for the incentives, doctors and hospitals must use Äúcertified EHR technology, the African Union in so Äúmeaningful., AU

These documents give us the clearest picture yet of what features physicians and hospitals need to search their EHR technology. They also tell us how the technology needs to be used to meet the definition of significant use in Phase 1 (2011) EHR adoption period.

Among other things, these documents show:
How physicians and hospitals can achieve significant use;
What software features you need and
What is the final resolution for CCHIT certification.

Making significant use in stage 1

* Ensure adequate privacy and security protections for personal health information

For the first time, CMS has also outlined specific measures of how the government will determine if an EMR is being used in a meaningful way for Phase 1 year of adoption (2011). Updated definitions of significant use for phase 2 (2013) and Stage 3 (2015) periods EHR adoption will be released in the year before periods begin.
